Thelma Houston Sunshower front

A pretty darn amazing album from Thelma Houston – recorded during the zenith of Jimmy Webb’s career, when Jimmy was not only one of the hippest songwriters in pop, but also kind of a mini-Burt Bacharach, writing, arranging, and conducting albums for a variety of stars. This little gem features Thelma fronting a set of 11 original tunes by Jimmy – arranged with a hip pop sophistication that few other talents of his time could match – soul and strings coming together in a wonderful swirl that makes for one of Thelma’s most compelling records.

Thelma Houston Sunshower back

By Bradly Briggs

“Sunshower” is the most incredible album legendary composer Jimmy Webb ever has written, arranged and produced to date in his long brilliant career…he eloquently states on original album sleeve “I hurry to present Thelma…the most prodigious talent I have ever encountered”, Miss Thelma Houston more than lives up to this proclamation by giving stunning & soulful vocal performances of rare beauty and tremendous emotional depth. Never a more brilliant marriage of artist & material, this stunning work for hard-core music lovers is an example of singing at its very finest, thankfully with this beautifully remastered release sound mix now is perfection. Upon original release sadly with zero radio support, yet by word of mouth word spreading like wildfire that Thelma Houston possessed THE ultimate voice, it became clear this remarkable talent was not to be missed…quickly upon first spin obtained multiple copies so that a fresh copy would always be around to savor & enjoy the ultimate vocal masterpiece!

Everybody Gets to Go to the Moon” is stirring & magnificent, hauntingly beautiful “To Make It Easier on You” features a memorable vocal that is soul-deep and magical. Many have recorded wonderful versions of “Didn’t We“, this definitive version is the one featuring a super-fine vocal that goes to the core of this great song, turning it inside out in a way that is stunning & unforgettable. “Mixed-Up Girl” is a hair-raising riveting vocal, Thelma pleading with passionate & heartbreaking longing that it is breathtaking to experience and by the time one gets to the glorious “Someone is Standing Outside“, clearly becomes obvious there are no filler songs in this solid collection of timeless & classic performances! Thelma lets it rip throughout her riveting “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” cover, turning it a notch up from the original in this hot cooking version that is a gas! Another stellar heartbreaking vocal goes deep inside “This is Where I Came In“, deep anguish is mesmerizing in the haunting & unique “Poketful of Keys“, making for another performance that is truly remarkable and memorable. “This is Your Life” is an epic ballad with a beautiful passionate vocal that pleads to a wayward lover…hard rocking “Cheap Lovin‘” is a cooker while closer is the spiritual “If This Was the Last Song“, ending this magical collection on a passionate high, soulfully breaking into “Somebody is Standing Outside” for a stirring finale.

Get this masterpiece while available as the brilliant combination of Thelma Houson & Jimmy Webb will never happen again, stellar reissue is perfection, timeless classic is extraordinary in its beauty and magnificence…Bravo Thelma Houston & Jimmy Webb!

This was Thelma’s first solo album before signing with Motown Records and going on to win a Grammy with her international hit “Don’t Leave Me This Way” in 1977.
