While his vocals are often compared to the late, great Teddy Pendergrass, most people remember him for his late 70’s disco hit “Holding Back” or for the more soulful “Hooked On You“. This album was produced by Butch Ingram and features many of his songs.

This rather obscure album was originally released on WMOT Records in 1979 and features everything from ultra-smooth ballads to sizzling-hot Disco tracks. David Simmons’s rich baritone bears a strong similarity to that of the late Teddy Pendergrass and (in many ways) it’s quite shameful that this album came and went mostly unnoticed but now that Expansion Records has reissued it on CD, it’s more than ripe for reappraisal and reevaluation. “Holding Back”, “Hooked On You”, “Someday, Someway” ,”Locked Up In A Groove” and the title track all deserved a better fate. Enjoy!

David went to the same high school as Bunny Sigler, and first sang with local friends in a group The Exzels. He gained his first studio experience when the group recorded a single ‘Hit Talk’ with producer Bobby Martin. In 1975 he formed a group Neo Experience and recorded two singles, ‘Human’ and ‘Eternal Sunshine’. The group included Vera Brown (who later joined The Richie Family) and Venson Unto (later the lead singer of Executive Suite). In 1978 David signed as a solo artist to the WMOT / Fantasy label for a debut album ‘Hear Me Out‘, including ‘Will You Miss Me When I’m Gone’.

The following year ‘The World Belongs To Me’ included the US r & b hit ‘Holdin’ Back‘ and a Butch Ingram penned / produced ballad ‘Hooked On You‘. The track ‘All I Wanna Do (Is Make A Little Love To You)‘ was also popular on Robbie Vincent’s Radio London Soul Show.
In 1981 David worked with Sister Sledge on a duet with Kathy Sledge ‘All The Man I Need‘, and toured with the group that year. Through a recording date with Damaris he met producers George Guess and Eugene Curry with whom he recorded ‘Love Tonight‘. The song was initially issued on the Pearl Harbor label in Philadelphia before its major release on Atlantic in 1984.

To this date, David still sings in his local church in Philadelphia. In 2015, two new albums were released, entitled ‘Love Tonight’ and ‘Smother Me’.
